Willie Mae Jordan Tate, 89, of 2016 John Tate Road, Bowman, wife of the late John Jasper Tate, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at her son’s residence. Mrs. Tate was born October 23, 1923, daughter of the late Lucy Fleming Jordan Bellew and step-father Andy Bellew. She was a homemaker and attended Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church, Forest Hills Assembly of God, and Bowman Church of God. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Bobby Ray Tate of Bowman, Phyllis Scarborough and her husband Kenneth, and Joyce Ann Suttles, both of Elberton; ten grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by son, Raymond Jasper Tate; and granddaughter, Robin Suttles. Mrs. Essie Hall Almond Adams, 77, of Dewy Rose, GA passed away Wednesday evening, May 1, 2013. Mrs. Adams was born in Athens, Georgia to the late Will Bynum and Bessie Fitzpatrick Almond. She was married to Mr. Woodrow Abner Adams, and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on May 30th of this year. She was a longtime member of Stinchcomb United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Adams is survived by a daughter, Carol Adams; three sons: James W. Adams, Bruce Adams and his wife, Shell, all of Dewy Rose, and Billy K. Adams and his wife, Janet, of Bowman. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a brother, William T. Almond. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph Adams, and a sister, Janelle Maxwell. Mrs. Hambrick was born in Bowman, GA, March 31, 1939, to the late Emmett Stevenson and Sara Dickerson Bowen. She was a retired accountant from Delta Airlines, a former real estate agent, and a member of Bowman Baptist Church. Surviving are children, Kimberly Skelton Parham and Ron Poulnott of Bowman, GA, Beth Skelton Williams and Bill of Clinton, SC, and John Patrick Hambrick and Valerie of McDonough, GA; sister, Patricia Allgood and Milford of Elberton, GA; brother, David Bowen and Joyce of Bowman, GA: nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Fina “Fika” Gozes Konfino
Fina “Fika” Gozes Konfino, 90, of Elberton, GA passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013. A native of Sliven, Bulgaria, Mrs Konfino was the daughter of Jacob Gozes and Miriam Menahem Gozes Fika was a graduate of the American College in Sogia, Bulgaria. She lived through and survived the Holocaust, and the subsequent Communist invasion of Bulgaria. In 1945 she married Anri Konfino, who survives her after 67 years of marriage. She emigrated with her husband and young child, David Konfino, to Israel where she witnessed the birth of that nation and lived there for the first 10 years of its existence. She and her family came to Elberton, Georgia in December 1959 where she has lived continuously. During this time she was employed as the Shipping Manager of Rilla Inc., a subsidiary of Elberton Manufacturing Company and retired at age 80 after 55 years of employment. Mrs. Konfino was also a member of Congregation Children of Israel since early 1960′s. Donna Lee Blackmon Seymour, of Pleasant Hill Road, Elberton, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 10, 2013, just 10 days after her 43rd birthday. Donna was born at Elbert Memorial Hospital on April 30, 1970, to Ronnie and Lynn Hill Blackmon. She operated an in-home daycare for many years and later became Administrator at Heardmont Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. Donna was president of the Elberton Kiwanis Club, served on the Elbert Memorial Hospital Foundation Board, the Foundation’s Young Professional Advisory Board, and the Elbert County Chamber of Commerce Board. You never saw Donna without a smile on her face or a twinkle in her eye. Wenona Dickerson Woody,91 of Elberton, GA, died Monday, May 27, 2013, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. She was born January 17, 1922, in Elbert County, GA a daughter of the late William Alexander and Icie Eavenson Dickerson. Wenona graduated from Royston High School in 1938. She worked 30 years at Elberton Mills in the weave room and was a member of Northside Baptist Church for 29 years. She was lovingly known as “Mema” by her family, and “Woody” to many of her friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her church family, her Petersburg Towers family and her many friends. She was a resident of Petersburg Towers, Elberton, GA for 29 years and a member of the Ambassadors Sunday School Class at Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Woody; sisters, Sara Clardy and Pauline Dickerson; and a brother, Horace Dickerson. Mr. Brown was born in Anniston, Alabama, March 22, 1947, to the late Carlton Allen Brown, Jr. and Nita Jane Turner Brown and was reared by his grandparents, the late Archie A. and Sattie Hill Turner. He was retired from Turner Concrete, was a member of Rock Branch Baptist Church, and was a devoted volunteer for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Elberton as long as his health permitted. Mr. Tony Charles Penland, 65 of Elberton, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Georgia. Tony was born in Asheville, N. C., and was the son of James H. Penland and the late Kathleen Jones Penland. In addition to his father, Tony is survived by his wife; Cindy H. Penland and a son T. J. Penland all of Elberton. Tony was an avid sportsman; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and anything that kept him outdoors. Most important Tony loved his family; he was a devoted and loving son, husband and father. Dr. Larry Ray Hart, Sr., MD, 61, of Dr. George Ward Road, Elberton, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at his residence. Dr. Hart was born in Anderson, South Carolina, September 24, 1951, he was the beloved son of Phillip Lee and Leila Inez Campbell Hart. He was a graduate of Elbert County High School, Emmanuel College, University of Georgia, and Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Hart began his medical practice in South Carolina and later served as Medical Director at Ridgeview Hospital in Atlanta. Prior to becoming disabled, his medical practice was at Elbert Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mrs. Martha King Eaves, 88, of Magnolia Estates, Elberton, Georgia passed away Thursday morning, June 6, 2013 at Elbert Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Eaves was born in Athens, Georgia, daughter of the late Hillyer Clark King, Sr. and Mamie Louise Kytle King. She was married for over 52 years to the late Charles Parker “Beefy” Eaves. She graduated from The University of Georgia with a degree in Home Economics, and spent her life working tirelessly alongside “Beefy” as he directed the Recreation Department for Elbert County and later founded and directed the activities of Camp Harmony in Elbert County. Mrs. Eaves is survived by two sons: Charles Parker Eaves, Jr. and his wife, Connie, and Frank H. Eaves and his wife, Pam; and one daughter, Peggy Louise Eaves. She also leaves behind six grandchildren: Jennifer E. Whitmire (Chad), Ashley E. House, Woodrow C. Brent Leland Phillips, 31, of Norris Webb Drive, Elberton, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 7, 2013, at his residence with his family at his side, after a courageous two year battle with frontotemporal dementia. Mr. Phillips was born in Elbert County, June 23, 1981, to Barry Phillips and Barbara Burry Bennett. Brent graduated from Elbert County Comprehensive High School in 1999 and from Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education in 2005. He was a Fifth Grade Teacher at Beaverdam Elementary School and was a Rams Football Coach at Elbert County Middle School. He was a member of Elberton Christian Church.
